　今世紀初頭、１４歳で旧ユーゴ（現スロヴェニア共和国）から移民としてアメリカへ渡った作家ルイス・アダミックによる青春の自叙伝。しかしいわゆるこれまでの自叙伝にみられるような一個人の苦労話とか「成功物語」などではなく、１９２０年代アメリカの文化、社会、政治などを背景に複数の同胞移民やネイティブ・アメリカンなどの経験を通して描かれたユニークな作品である。

　弱肉強食化した１９２０年代のアメリカは、まさにバブル後の日本と同じ状況を映し出している。移民たち一人ひとりの血と汗で築いた国アメリカ。彼らの夢と挫折を通して、「約束の土地」アメリカの行く末を模索する移民文学の傑作．．．。そして新しい価値の発見の書。

*　To America from a village in the province of Carniola, now a part of Yugoslavia, in 1913 came Louis Adamic, a boy of 14...His new book, first backgrounding his story with several chapters depicting his boyhood in his village home, narrates his life in this country for the almost two decades he has been living here. But it is hardly an autobiography of the conventional sort, for, although it outlines his movements and deals briefly with the many and highly varied jobs he has undertaken, his theme is less himself and his life than it is the country in which he has been living, which, for him, is the 'jungle' of his title. The United States, he says, 'is more a jungle than a civilization--a land of deep economic, social, spiritual and intellectual chaos and distress, in which by far the most precious possession a sensitive and intelligent person can have is an active sense of humor.' -N Y Times

「はしがき／ルイス・アダミック」

　この本は、一九一三年に一四歳をすぎたばかりの少年の私を、はるばるヨーロッパの故国からアメリカへ駆り立てたその様々な影響と、またこの興味津々たる国アメリカの、あらゆる場所で移民として生きてきた私自身の体験した物語です。私はこの物語が完璧な自叙伝であるというつもりはありません。（たとえそういうものが存在しうるとしても。）

　私たち移民は、これまでアメリカを建設するための重要な要素となってきました。私の同胞の多数――「ボウハンク」とか「ハンキー」を含む、バルカン半島および東欧や中欧からのスラブ人たち――は、この七、八〇年の間、とくに一八九〇年代から一九一四年にかけて、この国に流れ込んできました。彼らの、今日のアメカにおける物質的な偉大さや国力に対する労働者として貢献は、たとえ一般には認められなくとも、莫大なものと思われます。「……俺たちの肉体的な労働力の多くは、いまや血や汗の結晶となって、ニューヨークやその他の大都市のビルディング、全国の鉄道、橋の下に凍りついている。……」

　これに反して、私たち移民は、今日のアメリカを文明国というよりむしろ「ジャングル」に、つまり、深刻な経済、社会、精神的、知的な混沌と苦悩の国にしたということに対して、もちろん、かなりの責を負うています。そして、このジャングルの中で、敏感で知的な人間が持っているもっとも貴い遺産は、やはり、生き生きとしたユーモアの精神であるように私には思われます。

　アメリカへの移住は終わり、かつての「移民よ、来たれ」の看板は降ろされようとしています。このことは、今日、アメリカの国家が存続する上で、最も重要な一つであるようです。ですから、このような時期に、アメリカ移民の自伝的な書物のかなり乏しい書棚に、この『ジャングルの中の笑い』の本を並べることのできることは、私にとってこの上ない喜びです。

ルイス・アダミック（Louis Adamic 1898-1951）
1898年、現在のスロヴェニア共和国に農家の長男として生まれる。14歳のとき「南スラブ人国家独立運動」の学生デモに参加し退学となり、アメリカに単身移住。ニューヨークの新聞社、陸軍、水先案内事務所など転々としたあと作家活動に入る。1931年出版の『ダイナマイト』で一躍脚光を浴びると、『ジャングルの中の笑い』　『わが祖国ユーゴスラヴィアの人々』『私のアメリカ』『多くの国ぐにから』と、移民としての体験から世界を見つめた大作を次々と発表。　アメリカ エスニック文学(ethnic literature)の先駆をなすものとして、多民族共生あるいは文化多元主義を主要テーマに掲げたものとして、さらには戦後の世界を予告したものとして、今日、再評価の声が高い。1951年没。
　生誕百年を記念して祖国スロヴェニアで切手となる。
